The monitoring was conducted from December 12, 2018 to December 7, 2021 in the courts of St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Pskov and Moscow. The report includes the monitoring results of 325 hearings in 24 cases of public interest. These are cases on charges of terrorism, organised crime, gun trafficking, hate crime, crimes against justice and public order and public service. The case of the attack on the OMON officers providing private security services was heard by a jury.
The main violations of the right to a fair trial include:
- Ignoring the defendant’s state of health, preventing him from fully participating in the hearings;
- the detention of defendants in iron cages (in violation of human dignity);
- ignoring by the court the defendants’ or witnesses’ claims about giving testimony under torture or other pressure.
