The “Bears”: YouTube as Evidence for the Accusation

About the case: According to the investigation, members of the sabotage and assault group “Bears SS” participated in military actions against the formations of the DPR. Each of them is accused of violent seizure of power, participation in an illegal armed group, and undergoing training for the purpose of terrorist activities.

The case is being heard by the Southern District Military Court with a panel of three judges, presiding Judge Gurgen Serzhikovich Dovlatbekyan.

The prosecutor began reading the volumes of the case, in which YouTube videos were presented as evidence. It was stated that when searching the query “DSG Bears/Bears SS” on the YouTube platform, search provides clips of evidence of crimes. The prosecutor then provided detailed descriptions of the content of these videos. For example: “In the video, several soldiers with the military formation’s insignia are observed, one of them, during a mortar attack, said: ‘We won’t let the young republic grow old.’”

With the judge’s permission, the prosecutor showed the defendants the pages from the case volumes. The prosecutor then began questioning the defendants: did they recognize themselves or anyone else in the photographs and screenshots? One of the defendants stated that he was not in the photos, and when asked if he recognized the others, he responded that he did not want to testify against anyone else or himself.
